In drawings, I tend toward the “Sleepy Eye” or the “Look-Up Eye,” just because they’re fun to draw.
But in real life, I’m pretty much a perpetual “Mad-Eye.” Even when I’m sleeping. Yeah, they never close; I just have really dry eyes.

This is really gorgeous and I need to remember this.

"What if they discover they can do it themselves?"

austinkleon:

Michael Beirut has a great little piece on HBO’s “Talking Funny” special with Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Louis C.K., and what designers can learn from standup comedians. (For some reason, other creative types love to look to comedians for inspiration. I know I do…)

Loved this bit:

Ricky Gervais, in a revealing moment, asks, “Don’t you ever think, when we make people have this feeling of laughter, and they pay us money: what if they discover they can do it themselves?” The other comics are rather stunned at this. Seinfeld shouts, “But they can do it themselves!” Gervais, almost glumly asks, “Then why are they paying us?” Louis C.K. answers, “We’re a high octane version of it. We’re pros. They can play touch football, too.” And Seinfeld adds: “But that doesn’t hurt the NFL.”

Inspiration: Blacksad #nanographicmo

Ever since the french edition came out in 2001 (I’ve the second printing 2002) I’ve dragged the Blacksad sketchbook ‘les dessous de l’enquete’ around for inspiration. Of course I use it as a drawing board as well. (I hear cries of bibliophiles all over the world)

When I’m cranky with how a page is progressing I flip to ‘the living room scene after the gunshot’,

lesson learned: walk away for clarity return later to fix the mf-page

Or when I’m bored with colorproofs, I’ll flip to Guarnido’s lighting studies of the ‘confrontation with the big bad’ Lesson here: Always give yourself options rarely you get it right in one go and maybe another lighting will actually tell the story better.

What are your inspirations? Share them in the comments, blog-reply or tweet me @yskaya/@nanographicmo :) I’d love to know.

So Motor City ComiCon was last weekend and I had a good time at the show. The folks who put it on bent over backwards and really treated us right.

I met tons of great fans and fellow creators. Got to see my art rep -who is one of the nicest people I know. I enjoyed a really awkward moment with Edward James Olmos where, for a brief moment, we both thought we knew each other, and then I realized that he was just an actor, and he realized that I was just a guy in an interesting bowtie. We laughed. Awkwardly.
